Religion Cloaks Resource Wars

Most wars are resource wars, even if dressed up as religious conquests based around identity; the religious-ideological cloak not only legitimizes and adds fuel to the conflicts, but in many cases mobilizes them with the abnormal fervour that results from claims that transcend ordinary logic and reasoning.

The supposed biblically embedded expansionist vision of a “Greater Israel” that underpins Zionist identity, lays claims that encompass the sovereign territory of several countries in the region, including Lebanon and Jordan and also significant parts of Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

This concept, like many Zionist Jewish claims, is yet one more distortion of scripture, conveniently extracted from its biblical origins and carried into a modern warfare context, with clear genocidal implications.

It was Theodor Herzl, the father of political Zionism, who first wrote that the Jewish state should extend between the Brook of Egypt and the Euphrates, and this claim was then enshrined in “Israel’s” Likud Party manifesto.

It clearly embodies a genocidal vision from the start, since its realization would necessitate the removal of the existing populations of these countries; this is why, the phrase “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is so “offensive” to Jewish supremacists. It is a direct rebuttal of their own clearly stated agenda to wipe out a number of indigenous peoples – starting with the Palestinians, which is happening as we speak.

The political and religious have fused in a deadly complex that clearly encapsulates the parasitic settler-colonial state of “Israel’s” agenda to use military force to extinguish the Palestinians and “reclaim” their land, whilst itself claiming this as a religious mandate and fulfilment of divine law.

The land that is currently being ethnically cleansed of its rightful inhabitants by this military-religious genocidal machine, is land that Palestinians have nurtured and cultivated for centuries, and that is now being seized by military force of unprecedented violence and brutality.

Its “religious significance” can be seen in the plans to turn it into a prime “Gaza Riviera’, a plastic, materialistic shrine to capitalist consumerism, a glittering Dubai style conspicuous shrine to the worship of money. What could be more religious?

Resource experts and geologists have confirmed that the OPT sits on extensive oil and natural gas reservoirs, with 122 trillion cubic foot of natural gas in the Levant Basin; resources that Palestinians have been denied access to.

Just as the Occupied Palestinian Territory sits upon trillions worth of natural resources, the lie of religious claims and divine birth right, sits upon a bedrock of lies and greed, the grasping and rapacious nature of a people primed to steal, using the Wests military capabilities, in order to ensure their grip on a land that is strategically located, and advantageous for all parties involved, to jointly invest in.

The latest trend amongst US right wing politicians, to promote what they refer to as “Judaeo-Christian” values, and to hold these in opposition to what they see as their “enemy”, Islam, is alarming.

But the current “Judaeo-Christian” political movement, far from being a religious unity based on deeper understanding of religion, has instead become an exclusionary tool to undermine the legitimacy of other religious groups primarily Muslims, and indeed, to mobilize a movement against them, that utilizes US military dominance to achieve its goals.

The Christian right are now aligned with Christian Zionists and the increasingly powerful Jewish lobby in the US, which have jointly gained such momentum and power within the US government, that all US presidents slavishly declare their allegiance to “Israel” and enact their policies accordingly.

The capacity of religion to be used as a political ideological tool to justify the unthinkable and to stoke up sentiment that fuels unprecedented extremist violence can be seen in its mobilization today by the political religious right in the US to justify the genocide in Palestine.

The term “infidel”, that has increasingly been seen tattooed on right wing thugs including the US defence secretary Pete Hegseth (in its Arabic translation, “Kafir”), is supposed to connote an enemy of “Islam”, even though it originated in Christian Europe in order to designate those who rejected Christian dogma, being used predominantly in relation to Jews and Muslims.

Therefore, its ironic and moronic use by people like Hegseth and indeed a number of far right supposed adherents of the Judaeo-Christian ideology who now appear to cosplay as religious crusaders, suggests the kind of lack of religious knowledge that characterizes unhinged religious extremists of all flavours; they rarely understand religion and yet use a very narrow selection of ideas in their most black and white form, to underpin their whole identity – usually one of hate.

It is precisely this that we see in “Israel” a “country” formed on a narrow Zionist vision that encompassed and embraced a genocidal ideology as the underpinning of its identity and has remained true to that vision all the way to today – where it is finally enacting in full view, what it has enshrined all along: the killing of all surrounding it in order to “create” a “Greater Israel”.

In this way “Israel” and the US, two settler-colonial bosom buddies, get to align together over their militarily fuelled, religious extremist visions of bloodlust and domination while locked in a murderous clasp that seems to be increasingly isolating them on the global stage.

Even the original European colonisers have started to back away in horror as they begin to reluctantly declare “genocide”, not due to their consideration of ethics or their empathy for the Palestinian people, but because it is starting to look a little too like their holocaust of the past – the one that they initially thought they could pay homage to by sanctioning the misdirected revenge of the Jewish state of “Israel” and giving it carte blanche to do as it pleases.

Their declarations and “condemnations” have been carefully staggered though, to enable “Israel” to complete its dirty work and put off the need for Europe to confront the US and “Israel” before time; this way they get to avoid the confrontation they don’t deem important enough whilst maintaining the pretence of “clean hands”; by backing away gradually from the scene of the crime, they can deny they were ever knowingly involved.

The UK is a little late to this dinner party of pearl clutching hypocrisy, in limbo over their allegiance to and “special relationship” with the US, hoping they can play both sides for as long as possible, by moves such as declaring it is not a genocide, the day before wanted war criminal Herzog’s UK visit, and by silencing all dissent; the incriminating shadow of the Banksy mural stands like a damning, ghostly testimony to the moral weakness and hypocrisy of the UK government.

In Benjamin Mielowski’s declaration of today that Muslim immigration in Europe is ultimately to blame for Europe’s stance towards “Israel” in response to the UN’s report of genocide in Gaza, we can see the desperate clutching at straws – “Hamas proxies” and “Islamists” being terms that he has taken recourse to when faced with the outcome of his own unhinged religious extremist stance.

The truth is that “Israel” and the US make perfect murderous bedfellows in their greedy and unbridled pursuit of land, resources and geopolitical dominance in the Middle East through military might and at any human cost, whilst utilizing religious ideologies and tired propaganda as a convenient mask for their joint genocide.

The US behaves with the military aggression that it always has when dealing with other countries; from Cambodia to Congo, from Korea to Kuwait and from Sudan to Syria, enacting its despised and hated swagger on the world stage; but it gets to use the unhinged Jewish supremacists to make its campaign even more violently genocidal by leveraging their hate and imagined superior status, their religious fervour and messianic sociopathic complex; and the Jewish supremacists get to use the superior military might of the US to carry out their naked pursuit of resources and to mobilize their religious sickness into some supposedly legitimate claim.

In the meantime Gaza burns, the Palestinians are brutalized and killed and the world falls deeper into shadow, into a moral abyss of darkness from witnessing and being helpless in the face of this joint sick and deadly display of virulent power gone mad.
